The process of creating an animation video

Creating a 3D animation video is essentially a limitless process. After all, anything can be designed and crafted digitally. However, this also makes it crucial to consider the animation’s design early on, as changes can often be time-intensive. To keep this process as smooth as possible, Indall follows a fixed six-step procedure. Each step includes a set of action points and concludes with a "deliverable," indicated in italics.

Introduction

Every collaboration starts with an introduction, in which mutual expectations are discussed, the intended goals and of course the product or service. It is also examined what the client is already doing in the area of video outputs, so that the new production can be aligned with the existing content. Based on this, an action plan is drawn up to achieve a good final result in the most efficient way.

Deliverable: Action plan

Step 1. Script & storyboard

In this phase, the framework for the production is established, creating an overview of all relevant points of the product. This is prepared based on the discussions held, supplemented where possible with existing information and literature from the client. Following this, a session will be scheduled between Indall and the client (either physically or virtually), where all these points will be discussed regarding how they influence different parts of the product and to consult on how they can best be visualized. Often, a 3D CAD model is already available, and in this phase, its applicability is checked. A proposal for the desired style will also be made using a mood board or example videos.

All this information and knowledge is processed into a script that addresses all points. If necessary, the voice-over text will also be drafted in this document, and a suitable voice for this will be discussed. All requirements and constraints for the film (intended use, maximum length, resolution, etc.) are also coordinated in this phase. This script forms the basis of the film and must be approved by the client. Any (large) changes made in a later phase are time-consuming and therefore costly.

Deliverable: Script, which serves as the basis for the video, and a conceptual proposal outlining the starting points and directions of thought.

Step 2. Animatic

Based on the script, the preliminary montage is created. Depending on the scope and the project, this is a timeline with a style frame or reference image for each scene, or a first concept of the film in which all movements, elements, and camera angles are made. However, the material properties will most likely not be added yet, so that changes can be made quickly. This montage is also provided with audio (music, sound design, and/or voice-over) to clarify the tone of voice and the feeling. This animatic gives a good picture of the final product, in which it is important that the client checks whether all elements are mentioned and presented correctly. This is the phase in which these adjustments can still be applied relatively easily.

Deliverable: Animatic, with the right tone of voice

Step 5 – Final Editing

Once the animatic is approved, it will be further refined, and material properties, environment, lighting, etc., will be added. Text animations will also be incorporated at this stage, resulting in a complete final product. Throughout the process, there will be several review moments to keep the client informed about the progress and to gather feedback in a timely manner.

Deliverable: A complete video, including sound design, texturing, etc.

Step 6 – Delivery

In the final phase, there is an opportunity to make final adjustments to ensure the video meets expectations. This may include adding a call to action at the end of the film. After this, the video will be delivered digitally in the agreed specifications. If desired, we can also provide advice on the video's deployment, online targeting, etc. For example, consider creating a shorter version of the video for use as paid advertisements or as a teaser on social media platforms such as LinkedIn.

Deliverable: The 3D animation video or 2D animation video, ready for use.
