WijTechniek offers an attractive and adaptive e-learning:
Craftsmanship CO
Client
WijTechniek, CraftsmanshipCO
The Dutch Safety Board has investigated that carbon monoxide accidents caused by poorly installed or maintained combustion appliances occur more frequently than we think. Vakmanschap CO is a legally required certification for installers working on gas combustion installations such as heating boilers, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Our client WijTechniek had an e-learning for installers but wanted to offer a much more attractive module.
Together with WijTechniek, we have developed seven contemporary and adaptive modules for Vakmanschap CO.
The Assignment
It is a major challenge to motivate installers to participate in e-learning. Craftsmanship CO is legally required and therefore for many it is a 'must'. Our task was as simple as it was complicated: develop an e-learning course that is attractive and challenging for installers of gas combustion installations.
Thanks to our background in engineering and good collaboration with WijTechniek, we were able to get into the minds of the target group. We chose an interactive e-learning. Various scientific studies show that interactive learning works better than – not meant derogatorily – the old teaching methods.
With this knowledge in mind, we got to work.
Where the image tells the story
Be honest, do you keep watching a movie or reading a book if the beginning is disappointing? Indeed, and the same goes for e-learnings. The CO craftsmanship e-learning grabs you immediately, thanks to this opening:
Storytelling, as seen in the news item in the video, is an ideal means to clarify relevance and generate enthusiasm. This storytelling is reflected in all six modules. Partly in the texts, but also in other communication tools. For topics that need to make the invisible visible, such as gas flows, we have created videos that take the learner along in – in this case – the gas flows. We have also designed a specially crafted 3D animation style, photography, and infographics.
We do not choose mixed media for nothing. The use of different media continuously challenges the learner, making recertification no longer feel obligatory, but rather something they really want to learn.
Adaptive and Interactive
One of the requirements from WijTechniek was that the modules should be suitable for all installers. In a practical lesson, you can provide extra explanations to those who do not completely understand yet, but this is more difficult in e-learnings.
Adaptive learning provides the solution for this: the learning experience automatically adjusts to the learner's knowledge, progress, and learning style. Based on data from assignments and interactions, it is determined what someone already masters and where support is still needed. Thus, the learner receives extra explanations or additional material in the case of an incorrect answer.
Knowledge translated into learning content
Of course, there are requirements for the certificate Vocational Mastery CO. A vocational competency committee conducted research and established a test matrix. From there, we took care of everything for WijTechniek.
Thanks to our knowledge of the sector, we were able to act quickly and already knew a lot about the subject. The still missing knowledge was directly obtained from the knowledge holders. We translated this information into learning objectives, content strategy, framework, and ultimately source texts.
During the development, we involved stakeholders, such as Technology Netherlands and ISSO, in important decisions.
The result
The challenge of turning mandatory and sometimes dry material into an attractive e-learning experience was significant. The result is impressive thanks to the use of mixed media and out-of-the-box thinking!
The recertification Craftsmanship CO is no longer a boring answer to the learning questions, but a visual story with elements such as storytelling, interaction, text, and animation, which helps the learner better retain the material. After a successful pilot, the online module is now offered to all installation technicians in the Netherlands.
