It is a problem that many growing companies have to deal with: training staff so they can grow as well. Total installer Schouten Techniek is involved, among other things, in commissioning heat-cold installations. To keep up with growth, they needed strong digital security training.

The Assignment
One of the problems of Schouten Techniek was that it became increasingly difficult to professionalize in training personnel, not only because of the constantly changing technology but also in practical terms. To accommodate growth, additional staff were hired at various locations, who needed to be trained, and that was the challenge. Most of them do not have a computer or email, so how do you reach them?
It was required that Schouten Techniek achieve a next level of safety, and that’s where we came into play. Our assignment was to inform the employees of Schouten Techniek about the important theme of safety in an accessible and appealing way.
Our approach
You can see our approach as an awareness campaign within the company, without the staff feeling that the information is being pushed on them. What does this approach look like?
We developed a campaign that links safety on the construction site to situations that every Schouten Techniek employee can relate to. We introduced Fix: a character that cheerfully points out a safe workplace to colleagues. With humor, recognizable anecdotes, and daily scenarios, we made safety not patronizing, but rather recognizable, engaging, and fun.
The screens that hang in the office, for example, are equipped with safety instructions, such as behavioral rules. We have also provided the workspaces with flyers, infographics, posters with behavioral rules in all delivery vans, and a cardboard version of Fix, the internal expert on safety. And this is not the only role of Fix.
E-learning via WhatsApp
How do you reach employees who do not have a computer and are often on the road? Schouten Techniek provided Fix with its own WhatsApp channel and offers e-learning with safety instructions in this way. So via messages. As a result, Schouten Techniek also reaches employees without email or a computer.
And through a dashboard, Schouten Techniek effortlessly keeps track of progress and results. It made learning simple, recognizable, and visually appealing.
The result
Schouten Techniek has taken a significant step in training its staff. We have succeeded in making learning fun for a practically minded audience on a topic – safety – that seems obvious. We can proudly say that safety has fully come to the forefront for everyone at Schouten Techniek.
