Hydro Motion Team
The TU Delft Hydro Motion Team develops an innovative hydrogen boat for international competitions every year. For the annual design reveal, they needed technical 3D renders to showcase their new design. Indall stepped in as a partner to explain all the new features with precision.
The assignment
The assignment was clear and challenging. A series of renders had to be made from the construction models of the hydrogen boat that explained all the new technical features while also being visually appealing. The visuals had to be suitable for the design reveal of the boat, but also remain usable for online communication and presentations.
The biggest challenge was in the balance; over-simplifying would undermine the team's work, while too technical renders would lose the audience. Additionally, the Hydro Motion Team worked with 3D models that were thought out down to the smallest detail, but were of course not suitable for an exciting design reveal.
Our role was to bring structure, rhythm, and narrative to the jumble of technical information without undermining the design.
Our approach
After gathering all the information from knowledge sessions and technical documents, we started to understand the design. Which parts are essential to show? Which details can remain in the background? We made these choices based on our knowledge and close communication with the Hydro Motion Team.
From the content, we looked at imagery. How can overlays help to bring focus to specific parts, and how do we ensure that each image feels like part of a whole?
Instead of replacing the 3D renders, we enhanced them by adding color use and graphic accents that align with the team's identity and the moment of the reveal.
We have ultimately created one product reveal render for Hydro Motion Team, highlighting several elements and innovations of the boat. These different elements can also be used separately and are therefore multi-purpose for social media and other visual channels.
The result
The end result is a set of visuals ready for the big stage. These images not only showcase the technical quality of the design but also make the ambition of the team palpable.
The design reveal thus acquired a look that fits the level at which the TU Delft Hydro Motion Team operates: professional, thoughtful, and with attention to detail. For the team, this meant more control over their story and more pride in the presentation.
For us, it was once again a confirmation of where visual communication makes a difference, precisely at the intersection of technology and creativity.
